Stocking Stuffers for the Mac Maineiac in Your House
12/12/03

Here’s some ideas for low-cost stocking stuffers that can “accessorize” your Mac lifestyle.

iPod. If you’ve already purchased, or are considering purchasing, the low-end iPod model, remember that it doesn’t come with a carrying case or “dock” charging stand (which also has a mini-plug jack for attaching speakers). I highly recommend a case, both to clip onto a belt or jogging apparel, and to protect the screen, which can get scratched if carried in a backpack or computer bag with other items.

Speaking of speakers, there are a number of reasonably priced small speaker systems that will turn the iPod into a nice portable or small-room audio system. You don’t need the docking stand – the speakers can plug right into the iPod’s headphone jack.

Obviously, you need music to play on the iPod. Consider iTunes Music Store Gift Certificates, which can be purchased online and either e-mailed or USPS-mailed to your favorite music lover. Check them out at www.apple.com.

Also for the music lover, consider a supply of blank CDs for burning your favorite tunes to use in the car. There are also other solutions for using your iPod in the car. There are FM transmitters that send your iPod music to your car stereo through the radio antenna, and adapters that connect to the car stereo through the cassette player. Again, check out the Apple Store online for more details.

Got a digital camera and still have the small capacity memory card it came with? Get a memory card with more capacity. Even the local discount store (OK, WalMart) has a wide selection.

Panther. It’s like getting a whole new Mac. Check Amazon.com for some great prices (up to $40 off the MSRP).

Along with Panther, consider more RAM for your Mac. Prices are very good – 256MB can be had for around $79.

Two-button mouse. There are several good optical models to choose from in the $30 range. Don’t have time to mail order? They can also be found at WalMart, Staples, BestBuy, Circuit City. Ideal for Panther users, as you can program buttons to take advantage of Expose’ features. I recommend getting one with a scroll wheel, which really makes browsing long web pages more enjoyable and efficient.

Finally, a .Mac subscription. Email, secure online storage, free games and other software, space for posting photos, movies, easy-to-build web pages for your virtual Christmas cards.
